Character Death in Cyberpunk 2080

Character Death - Marked for Death

For a Character to die against the member's permission, they must be Marked for Death.

Death of a character, if not decided by the person running the character, can be officiated by a staff member. However, staff will not consider the possibility of a character dying until they are Marked for Death. To become Marked for Death, one of the following must apply:

  • The character is killed by another character defending themselves from yours.
  • The character engages in activities that are undoubtedly evil (such as the killing of defenseless innocents).
  • The character chooses to engage in a situation that is obviously far beyond their capabilities.
  • The character does something practically suicidal (jumping off a cliff, jumping into molten lava, etc.)
  • The character has a Bounty of Grade A or higher.
  • The character is a Chrome Character.
  • The character is attempting something very ambitious (raiding a corporate HQ or black site, taking on a large number of gang members, attempting to break someone out of prison, etc.).
  • The character is in a Gig.
  • The character is in a Character Event or a Server Event.
  • Your character's Affiliation with a faction is Hostile or worse. (This means Marked for Death only applies when facing members of that faction.).
  • Your character has no Luck left (will be explained momentarily).

If any of these are true, your character is thus Marked for Death.

Luck

To encourage you to get out there and engage with Night City, all characters have Luck.

Luck is your character's lifeline out of certain death. Should another character attack yours, or you simply come upon your character's end in some way, you can choose to call upon your character's Luck. At this point, you choose how your character is saved. Perhaps Trauma Team saves them from the brink of death should they have it. Perhaps they hold on just long enough to find help somewhere. Perhaps they miraculously survive their grevious wounds and hold out long enough for a Medtech to find them.

However, be careful - you only have 1 chance of Luck! Once you use it, your character's next defeat could be their end.

Please keep the following points in mind when considering using your Luck:

  • It cannot save you from the conditions that mark you for death, as listed above.
  • You cannot gain Luck back, no matter what.
  • Luck does not fully restore your character. It takes them out of danger and keeps them from dying.
  • If you are on a Gig or some other objective, they can no longer participate, as they will need time to recover for at least a week.
  • Luck, if roleplayed as an intervening force in combat, cannot be used to sway combat into your favor or to have any impact on the narrative aside from saving your character. This is a lifeline, not an ally that turns the tides of battle.

If you wish to use your character's Luck, please alert a Helper first (and then moderators if no Helpers respond).

CvC - Character versus Character

In Cyberpunk 2080, for combat, we run by Conditions to Kill.

This is obviously out of the ordinary, but essentially, in order for your character to kill someone else, the targeted character to be killed must be Marked for Death, as explained at the top.

Attacking Other Characters

You can attack almost any character you want. You cannot, however, attack characters who still have Character Protection. So long as all the following conditions are true, they are under Character Protection:

  • The character has not acquired any reputation, or completed any gigs.
  • The character is not Marked for Death.
  • The character is a Normal Character.
  • The member does not want their character to be attacked.
  • The character is not doing anything that would provoke an attack. (Ex: Actively antagonizing others, disrupting characters in a manner that would warrant an attack, etc.)
  • The character has not attacked other characters (including yours).
  • The character is not currently in a gig/character event that applies Marked for Death.

Should all of these apply, the character is under Character Protection. They cannot be attacked. This exists to protect new characters who are just starting out from other characters who seek out weaker victims to prey upon.

If your character attacks someone with Character Protection your character is immediately killed before a first strike lands.

Determining Outcomes of CvC Combat

Determining the outcome of combat between two characters is tricky, especially if both believe their character would be more powerful. However, before we explain how this works, please keep the following in mind:

We want both members to write a collaborative narrative. Cyberpunk 2080 is not a competitive PvP scene.

This means that you shouldn't consider having your character lose or win until you first determine what would best make a good narrative.

With this in mind, this is our policy on determining CvC outcomes:

  • The staff will always have the final say in the outcome of combat. The only instance where this will be put into question is if you believe a staff member is biased towards one or another character.
  • We generally would rather an attacker wound, capture, or otherwise introduce a debilitating punishment for being defeated rather than just killing them. Killing characters is a finality that does not always fit a narrative that may be made far better by letting that character live. Staff will usually favor the defeated character if the victorious character has no personal reason to kill them.
  • When determining an outcome in combat, consider how the characters are stacked. If one is obviously stronger than the other, then unless the idea is that an underdog is going to defeat a stronger opponent, then the stronger will generally win.
  • Murderhobos, characters who try to murder others for no real reason, are not looked upon favorably and may have their attempts voided if their reasons for attacking sound similar to "my character is insane" or "my character was looked at funny."
  • Please keep roleplay rules in mind, such as not powergaming.
